Analysis of flow through tube tanks using ANSYS

Ansys stands for Analysis System. Ansys is called an ‘Analysis system’ just because in Ansys workbench all kinds of analysis systems are combined on one platform. In Ansys, to study about the fluids there is another in-built software known as CFD (Computational Fluid Dynamics) which helps us optimize our designs and can easily get us the results which we aim at. Ansys CFD goes beyond qualitative results to deliver accurate quantitative predictions of fluid interactions and trade-offs.

In Ansys, there are mainly 5 sections through which we can create or design a particular item, they are:

STEPS:

  1. From the Analysis systems select fluid flow option (depending on the type of flow)
  2. Click on Geometryand in it select the new design modeller.
  3. Adjust the design modeller based on your convenience and requirements like changing the units and selecting a particular axis.
  4. Draw/Create a sketch based as per your requirements

(This takes a lot of time as the diagram has to be exact from all the three planes and should meet the designing ratios)

  1. Then use the Sweepoption to sweep along a plane or an axis

(Sweep allows you to create a volume around that axis and makes a 3D view of the figure)

  1. Use the Meshoption to create a mesh around the sketch.

(Mesh breaks the domain into small elements which allows it to improve accuracy and the speed of simulation).

  1. Then mark the inlet and outlet points in the tank.
  2. Using the Setup option select the type of flow and also the kind of fluid which will be flowing through it.
  3. Then set the velocity and the pressure of the liquid and also the rate of inlet and outlet.
  4. By using the hybrid initialization, we can get the initial parameters which can be used to design the component in real-time application.
  5. Then use the calculation option and set the number of iterations by which we can get accurate results for the project.
  6. After the calculations are done, selecting the Results tab we get the project done and by checking the velocity contour we can know where there is maximum velocity and where there is a large amount of turbulence inside the tank.
  7. In the result section, we can also vary a lot many parameters like pressure, velocity, density etc. by which we can know how the tank performs under varying conditions.
  8. We can also get an animated video of the project just by selecting a parameter and by setting a clarity of the video.

These are a few basic steps by which we can analyse the fluid flow in a tank using Ansys.
