Low Cost Mini Project Ideas for Electronics Engineering(ECE)

For any engineering student, mini project serves as an effective platform to showcase their skillsets. Whether it is going to be the examiner or the interviewer, you would like to impress them with your projects which actually reflects your engineering career.

But doing a good mini project is not easy, as there are a lot of factors that influence it. The most important factors that influence your mini project are,

  1. Cost
  2. Time
  3. Availability of resources

Out of these, cost is the most important influential factor for majority of the mini projects. As an engineering student you will be able to spend a lot of your time on building projects and also utilize your college infrastructure for doing mini projects, but you will not be able to spend more money for your project for obvious reasons.

Cost, being the most influential factor for doing mini projects is very true if you are an electronics and communication engineering student looking to do good ECE mini projects.

If you want to do an ECE mini project on latest technologies, you will have to use high-end sensors, better microcontroller board, more efficient actuators, which are not very easy to get and also come with a bigger price tag.

But, this doesn’t mean that you need to do ECE mini project only on out-dated technologies to reduce the cost. You can still do ECE mini projects at low cost by selecting the topics carefully.

Also getting the right kind of guidance / course tutorials for doing your mini project will help you save a lot of money on replacement of damaged components, kits wastage etc.

So, here I am suggesting some of the ECE mini projects on latest technologies which you can do at low cost and still impress your recruiter/ examiner.

Best mini projects for ECE students

1. Weather Monitoring System using IoT:

Through this electronics mini project you will be developing an electronic device that will be connected to the internet via WiFi and sends the data to the cloud real-time. A DHT (Digital Humidity Temperature) sensor will be connected to the device which will sense the temperature/ humidity difference in the environment and send the data to the microcontroller. You can also program the electronic device to send notification to the user whenever the data exceeds a threshold value that you set.

2. Home Automation System:

Through this electronics mini project you will be developing an electronic device that can be used to control all the home appliances through an Android App. The device uses a bluetooth module to establish the connection with the Android App. Also the project uses an 8051 based microcontroller which will act as the brain of the system and controls the actuation process. You can also program the microcontroller to perform unique type of actuations.

3. Automated Street Lighting System using IOT:

The objective of this ECE mini project is to build an electronic device that can replace the conventional street lights to achieve more energy efficiency. You will be needing a LDR (Light Dependent Resistor) which can detect the light intensity present at the environment and send the data to the microcontroller. You can then program the microcontroller to carry out specific set of actuations (like switching ON/OFF street lamp) based on the value that the sensor provides. Also all the data that is collected will be stored on the cloud for analytics purposes.

4. Automated Railway Crossing:

This is an excellent electronics mini project to do, as it provides an innovative solution to the real-time industrial problem which we are still having today. Through this project you will develop an electronic device that can detect the train movement and open/ close the railway gate accordingly. As part of this project, you need to use IR sensors to detect the movement of train and send the data to the microcontroller. The microcontroller then controls the actuation process depending on the readings.

5. Smart Irrigation System using IOT:

The objective of this ECE mini project is to build an IOT based electronic device that can facilitate the irrigation process with minimal loss of water. To achieve this, you will be using a soil moisture sensor that can detect the moisture level present in the soil and send the data to the microcontroller. You can then program the microcontroller to perform some actuations (switching On / Off of water pump) whenever the moisture level drops below a threshold value that you set. All the data will be sent to the cloud for storage and analytics purposes.

6. Access Control using RFID System:

Security system is one of the most researched technologies out there in the market. This electronics mini project will give you a good exposure to such innovative technology, through which you will be developing an electronic device that can authenticate the user entry. This project uses an 8051 based microcontroller that acts as the brain of the system and authenticates the user entry based on the data stored in it. The device will also be mounted with a LCD which will display the authentication message to the user.

7. Smart Building using IOT & PIR:

Smart systems are being implemented on almost all the industries to save energy and achieve more efficient operations. Through this electronics mini project, you will develop an electronic device that can sense the number of occupants within the room and switch on/ off the appliances in the room based on the activity inside. The data collected will also be sent to the cloud for data analysis purposes. You can also program the system to perform it as a theft monitoring system by connecting the device with a buzzer.

8. Smart Water Monitoring System using IOT:

Water management system is one of the complicated process to do in the real life scenario. Through this electronics mini project you will be able to build a device that can be used to efficiently manage the water consumption. The device will be equipped with a water flow sensor which can detect the flow of water through it and send the value of water consumed to the microcontroller. This value will be then sent to the cloud and stored for analysis purposes.

9. Persistence of Vision:

Advertising is one of the major industries that uses technology to carry out their operations. POV (Persistence of Vision) is one such technology which is being widely used in the advertising industry. This electronics mini project revolves around the concept, when we see images in quick succession it creates an optical illusion in our brain allowing us to detect motion. The electronic device that you build will show letters that are pre-programmed by rotating the LED’s at some specific speed.

10. Health Monitoring Wearable Glove:

This particular electronics mini project is an application of the wearables technology. Through this project you will be developing a glove which a user can wear and use to detect the pulse rating of other persons. This project uses the lilypad Arduino (miniature size Arduino) which will be embedded on to the glove using a conductive thread along with the pulse sensor. A small display will also be embedded onto the glove to show the pulse values of the user.
