Getting a parking space in urban areas has become a hectic task due to the increase in the number of vehicles. Also finding a parking space during peak hours is almost impossible, to overcome this issue and to help drivers and car owners in this Matlab project, an automatic car parking system is simulated in Simulink. Overview

This system can be used in residential parking, offices, hotels, showrooms, hospitals, shopping centres, airports, and stadiums. An automatic gate is placed in the entry and exit path of the parking and a display is positioned in the entry to denote the availability of parking space. Ultrasonic sensors are used to detect the presence of the car. If any vacant parking is available it is displayed in the monitor and the route to that particular parking spot is displayed.

Objectives of the automatic car parking system using MATLAB:

  • Help drivers to locate the parking spot and reserve the spot at the entrance
  • Navigate the drivers to the empty parking slot by displaying the route in the entrance
  • Allotting the parking spot automatically
  • Monitoring the parking slot to detect whether it is free or occupied
  • Keeping a record of the date and time

Project Implementation

The automatic car parking system simulation is done in MATLAB Simulink by setting up the following environment.

IR sensors are mounted on the road to detect the car when it approaches the entrance and the availability of slots are displayed. Sensors are also positioned in the parking areas to detect the cars parked in that area. When a car is parked in the slot the sensor registers its entry as 1. 

When all the slots are full the gate will not open and show the message “slots are full”. As soon as the car leaves from a slot the count is reduced and the same is reflected on the display.

Also when a car approaches the entrance, an empty slot is automatically allotted and the route for that slot is displayed in the monitor.

Since the parking position of the cars cannot be detected properly by the sensors an Around View Monitor camera is used along with the sensors to notify the drivers when a car is not parked properly.

This automatic car parking system can be implemented in heavily crowded cities to help car owners to save time and fuel by guiding drivers and owners of the cars to find a parking spot quickly.
