To reduce the conflicts and make the traffic flow smooth all over the length of the road, the design of the intersection must be very effective. The design intersection is very crucial because it affects the efficiency of the operation, travel time, safety, and capacity of the roads. If the junction is not designed properly it may act as a bottleneck to the whole road line. If it is designed efficiently then all the vehicle users reach their destination fast and smooth.

The design or capacity of the intersection is mainly depending on the growth of traffic.  Studies must be conducted before the designing of the intersection so it can be designed in the proper place.

More than 5 lakh people in India die every year due to road accidents. So, intersection design plays a very important role in the whole highway transportation.

Requirements:

Knowledge of traffic engineering.

Knowledge of signal designing. 

Data collection from the highways.

PCU factors of all kinds of vehicles.

Any method of signal design. (here we use webster method)

Project Implementation:

  1. Identify the area or intersection that is not in good design or yet to be designed.
  2. Collect the traffic flow data either from automatic or manual.
  3. Convert all the vehicles into one single axial loaded vehicle (PCU factor is used)
  4. Check the pavement lengths as per IRC codes.
  5. Design the traffic signal at the intersection for all the available roads (even pedestrians).
  6. Check whether the derived signals are satisfying on road conditions.
  7. Report the whole traffic timings to the municipality (if possible).

Software requirements:

  • To show the simulation of the traffic flow software’s like PTV Vissim, HDM, etc is used.
