The recent structures which are built these days follow the traditional design and the components like a beam, columns, etc. are designed in a way that only the loads get transferred easily but are highly uneconomical.

The above disadvantages paved the way for the development of a special type of beams called castellated beams. These beams are economical and have a high load-bearing capacity, by changing only its casting pattern.

An I-beam when subjected to a longitudinal cut along with the web of the beam and by following a special pattern, it divides the web and reassembles the beam with the deeper web by taking advantage of the special pattern.

Properties

  • The castellated beams have a 50% much deeper web than nominal beams.
  • It can handle 40% more moment carrying capacity than nominal beams
  • These can be designed of wide-span and can be made of wide-bay
  • These have less weight of top flange and heavier weight of bottom flange which makes it better than nominal beams
  • Maximum floor to floor height can be attained and these can be easily erected.

Applications

  • used in the construction of bridges
  • It is used in the construction of dams
  • Used in the construction of high-rise structures

Software’s required

  • Auto-cad
  • E-tabs
  • Sap:2000-14

The code which is used for the design of castellated beams is the transverse stiffener code by the British standard code.

Advantages

  • The major advantage in the casting of steel beams is that the depth of the beam can be increased without an increase in its weight.
  • Another advantage is that this can be used to integrate MEP.
  • The another advantage is that the installation cost can be reduced up to 10%

Disadvantages

  • The major disadvantage is that there are gaps in the web which can alter the stress distribution in the beams
  • The another disadvantage is its complexity of the design
  • The fabrication cannot be done at the site but it should be done in the factories, which directly increases the cost of construction.

Conclusion

From the above studies, it is found that the cost can be saved up to 60 ft savings over 5+ beams and over 40% crossover savings can be attained over 100+ beams.
