PLC based Automatic packing system

It's been over a century since the opening days of industrialization. From then a variety of machinery using different technologies have taken a considerable amount of space in our factories and industrial units. As we complete the first two decades of the 21st century we are still in the process of revolution when it comes to how machines work. Today we will be looking at such a revolutionary machine that is powered by PLC (Programmable logic controller) making packing more agile and low cost.

The whole aim of newer systems has been the reduction of the total cost while reducing the time consumed. The PLC-based automatic packing project is made with the same target in mind. While the automatic packing system is nothing new, the addition of PLC makes it more reliable. This new system makes it possible to pack different sized packets which were a problem with the older version. Also, the more automation abilities of this system make it possible to be operated by even unskilled labor. The project implementation details and the parts required for the setup are given below.

Project implementation:

The automatic packing system based on PLC comes with a couple of sensors and a conveyor system. The products are first passed through a conveyor which is then backed and sealed using a sealer. Multiple sensors are employed in the process to assist the sealing process. The product through the conveyor will reach the first proximity sensor which will start an extendable cylinder which will seal the packing film by extending it. The punch and sealer given will complete the packing. Once the punch sealer is employed a second sensor will pass a message to the first sensor which will repeat the process. This is continued until all the products are packed.

PLC:

The programmable logic controller has a lot of applications in an industrial setup. This is a small digital computer that makes automation possible at a lower cost. This can be easily programmed with the help of a computer and can be downloaded to the PLC computer. There are special applications available to program PLCs.

Proximity Sensors:

There are two proximity sensors used in this system. The first one will sense when the product enters the sealing area from the conveyor and starts the sealing process. The second proximity sensor will sense once the product packing is complete so the next product can enter the sealing area.

Punch and sealer:

The punch and sealer is simple hardware that is essential in this system. The piece of hardware helps in sealing the packet properly by exerting thermal energy. The sensors are attached to this hardware so it can do the job precisely.

Conveyor: A common motor-controlled conveyor belt setup is added to this system. This will void the need for human labor to move the product throughout the process.
