Smart Street Lighting System Using Renewable Energy Resources

After 150 years, the entire world will run out of the most important non-renewable Energy resource “Coal”, where 48% of the total power now is generated from it. Once it is exhausted, entire world is going to face severe power shortages. In order to avoid this shortage, the entire world has started focusing on the Renewable Energy Resources. A step further to this solution is hybridizing the Renewable Resources to generate power based on the availability to maintain continuity in the Power Generation. Through this project you are going to build a unique hybridized power generation system using Solar and Wind Energy.

The Solar Panel and Wind Mill will be connected to the battery through Charge Controller. The Charge Controller will control the power obtained from both sources and will give constant power to the battery. The DC power generated will be stored in the battery. If you want you can innovate this system into Smart Street Lighting System where the street light will glow whenever there is vehicle or humans going in the street.

This Street Lighting system will work as long as sun and wind exists. For this you need to program the micro controller in such a way whenever there is a vehicle or Human, the light will glow, Once the vehicle or human left the street, the light will turn off automatically. The Street Light will be connected to the battery through inverter circuit and transformer for getting required AC power. You can also a Wi-Fi module and you can store the light status in the remote cloud for further analysis.

Project Description:

  1. Arduino Uno: The digital and analog input/output pins equipped in this board can be interfaced to various expansion boards and other circuits. Serial communication interface is a feature in this board, including USB which will be used to load the programs from computer.
  2. Wi-Fi Module: ESP8266 Wi-Fi module is generally used to establish the wireless communication between the devices. But this module is not capable of 5-3V logic shifting and will require an external logic level converter
  3. N-Channel Relay Module: The n-Channels Relay module’s operating voltage is 5V DC with drive current of 20mA. This relay can be interfaced with many number of microcontrollers such as Arduino, AVR, PIC, ARM and MSP430. Here we use Arduino, because programming is simple. This relay module has ports “NC” abbreviated as “Normally connected to COM”, “NO” abbreviated as “Normally open to COM” and “COM” abbreviated as Common. Along with these, there will be two types of LED’s, one is to show the power status of the board and other for showing the relay status. Here “N” indicates the no relays on single board. We have 2, 4, 6, 8, 10, 12-Channel Relay Module are available in the market.
  4. Solar Panel: The device which converts the solar energy into electric energy is called Solar Panel.
  5. Wind Mill: The device which converts the Wind Energy into Rotational Mechanical Energy is called Wind Mill.
  6. Generator: The device which converts the Rotational Mechanical Energy into Electrical Energy is called Generator.
  7. Transformer: A transformer is a static electrical device that transfers electrical energy between two or more circuits through electromagnetic induction. A varying current in one coil of the transformer produces a varying magnetic field, which in turn induces a varying electromotive force (emf) or "voltage" in a second coil.
  8. Inverter Circuit: Inverter Circuit: The Inverter circuit is a circuit used to convert AC power to DC power and vice versa.
  9. Charge Controller: The charge controller will give constant output to the battery when Charge Controller is connected to multiple power sources.
  10. IR Sensors: The component we use to find whether there is any obstacle in the path in which our trolley is going are IR sensors (Infrared).

Project Implementation:

  1. Interface the Solar Panel and Wind Mill (Coupled to generator) with Charge Controller
  2. Now Connect Charge Controller to the battery. The battery will start charging as soon as the power sources start producing power
  3. Now Interface the Arduino with Wi-Fi Module and Relay
  4. Upload the code
  5. Connect the Light to battery through Inverter circuit, transformer and Relay
  6. You can check your Renewable Smart Street Lighting System
  7. The data regarding present status of the light can be updated in the remote server and can be retrieved for analysis

Software requirements:

  1. Arduino IDE : You will be needing Arduino IDE software to write and upload the programming logic onto the Arduino Uno board
  2. Thingspeak : Also, you need to create an account in the ThinkSpeak IoT platform to integrate the system onto the cloud and store the data online

Programming language: Arduino Programming (C++)
