Smart Building using IoT & PIR Description – Problem Statement


As part of the challenge, the participants have to build an IoT device that converts a conventional building into a Smart Building, which can automate the lights in a room based on the occupants.
The Smart Building System using IoT & PIR should satisfy the following criteria:

  • The Smart Building System using IoT & PIR should be completely autonomous and be driven by Arduino Uno, an open-source hardware and software platform
  • The Smart Building System using IoT & PIR should sense the number of occupants inside a room using PIR sensors
  • The Smart Building System using IoT & PIR should be equipped to switch on/off the lights inside the room automatically based on the number of occupants – switch off all the lights when there is nobody and switch on the lights when it is occupied
  • The Smart Building System using IoT & PIR should display the number of occupants in the room on an LCD screen (16*2 screen is acceptable) attached to the system
  • The Smart Building System using IoT & PIR should also send the data of the number of occupants and the status of the lights in the room (ON/OFF) to the cloud via Internet. This data should be accessible from anywhere in the world via Internet

Video Submission Criteria

  • The video should have clear demonstration of the project
  • The video should have the participant clearly visible in addition to the project
  • The video should explain the project development in phases (ex: Flowchart)

Kit to be used

  • You should use only Arduino Uno as the Microcontroller/Embedded System core for the project.
  • You should use PIR sensors to detect the presence of people inside the room
  • You should use ESP8266 WiFi module to send the data to the cloud via Internet
