Crowd Control using Anti-riot Drone

Crowd control and monitoring is a difficult task for the police forces if the strength of the crowd is huge. Usually, the police will use tear gases to disperse the crowds in uncontrolled situations but during this process, the police might be injured to avoid such situations we can use the drone to control the crowds.

With the advancement in technologies, the usage of drones increased a lot. In this drone project, we will propose a solution to this problem.

Overview

The drone which we are going to develop is a modular drone which can be used for two purposes. In the first case, the drone will carry less non-lethal weapons like blinding lasers and LRAD (Long Range Acoustic Device) and the second will carry non-lethal weapons like a paintball gun, pepper spray canisters, etc.

In both cases, the drone is equipped with a speaker to communicate and give warnings. The drone has two flight modes tethered and untethered. In tethered mode, the drone has more flight time where it is connected to a power supply in the ground but the altitude is limited in this mode. The untethered mode increases the range of the drone but with the cost of flight time.

Project Implementation

Octocopter configuration is used to develop the anti-riot drone. Fabricate the frame using carbon fibre to give more rigidity to the drone. Calculate the approximate AUW of the drone including the payloads (paintball gun, pepper spray, LRAD, laser system, etc.)

The paintball gun is powered by a high-pressure carbon fibre air system through which you can able to fire 80 balls per second. You can also control the frequency of firing the balls.

Pepper Spray can be operated with the help of servo motor. The pepper spray canister can be turned ON/OFF with the help of a servo mechanism.

Components required:

Brushless motor - It is selected based on the thrust requirement. In our case, the required thrust is 45 Kg. According to our configuration, each motor has to produce 6 kg of thrust. The selected motor is T MOTOR P60 170KV.

ESC - Electronic Speed Controller is used to control the speed of the motor. 80A ESC is used for this motor.

Propeller - Propellers are the lift generating devices. 22.6x6 inch propeller is used to generate the lift.

Battery - For the untethered mode a battery is required to power the model to achieve a good flight time 20,000 mAh battery is used to power the drone.

Flight controller - Pixhawk 4 flight controller is used to perform the advanced functions and to connect all pieces of equipment.

GPS - GPS is used to perform the autonomous flight

Transmitter and Receiver - Long range transmitter and receiver is used to cover more distance during the operation.

Thermal Camera and HD camera - It is used to get a clear view of the nuisance creators.

Telemetry system - It helps to downlink the data recorded from the drone and also to send the control inputs from the ground station.

With the help of the crowd control drone, we can able to reduce the damage as well as the manpower to control the crowd.
