Design and Simulation of electricity generator floor tiles using Solidworks

Introduction

Electricity is very important in our daily lives, we need it for various purposes. India is one of the largest producers and consumers of electricity. The demand for electricity is increasing. There is a need to produce electricity in a sustainable manner. The electricity should be renewable and efficient. About 70% of the electricity in our country is generated by thermal power plants. It is also important to produce electricity that is pollution-free and meets our daily demands. Electricity generator tiles could be a good source for producing electricity.

Solidworks is a software that is used to model, design and simulate various projects. Solidworks is used for design and simulation of mechanical projects.

Working

Electricity can be generated by tiles by walking on them. These tiles are designed in such a way that they convert the mechanical energy caused due to walking into electricity. The tiles used for electricity generation are made of piezoelectric material. Piezoelectric materials are materials that produce a charge when a force is applied. This charge develops a voltage. So when one steps on these tiles, the piezoelectric material will produce voltage. This piezoelectric material develops an AC voltage and this AC is converted to DC voltage by a rectifier to store the electricity. The energy produced by the piezoelectric material is stored in a battery in the form of chemical energy. These tiles contain gears, springs, generators, and a rack and pinion. When someone walks on the tiles, the tiles get stressed; the rack and pinion help to produce electricity by driving the small generators.

Components:

Gears:

Gears transfer power from one machine to another. Here gears are used to transfer motion and torque between components in mechanical devices. As the tiles are pressed due to motion (walking) a torque is produced.

Springs:

Spring is used to absorb and store the energy when the tiles are pressed.

Generator:

The generator is the most important component in this project as it is the part that converts mechanical energy to electrical energy. It is also called Dynamo.

Rack and Pinion:

The rack is fixed; it is rectangular with teeth on one side. The pinion is circular with teeth on the outside. The pinion runs on the rack in a straight line. The Rack and Pinion are used to convert rotational movement to linear motion.

When we walk, a vertical force is applied and this vertical movement leads to rotatory motion that produces electricity.

CONCLUSION

This method is very effective, renewable and pollution-free. It can be set up in any place to produce electricity. This is cost-effective as the piezoelectric material is cheap. One of the major disadvantages is that they cannot produce electricity all the time. Electricity is produced only when someone walks on the tiles.
