Top 5 Robotics Project Ideas for Kids (Videos Included)

Robots are simply awesome. Who wouldn’t agree to this fact? Everyone is crazy about the fact that robots make complex tasks look simpler.

From the robot that is used in the manufacturing line to carry out tedious tasks to the robot that roams around Mars collecting tons of data, all robots are fascinating. Even robots make excellent movie characters which most of the kids admire and love. Here is a list of best online robotics projects for middle school and for high school kids. And also if you want your child to dive deeper into robotics, check out this blog where we have curated list of top 5 online robotics classes for kids

Raise your hand, if your kid fell in love with the robot character that they saw in a movie (my vote is for Bay max from Big Hero 6) and nudged you so much to help build their very own robot. Unfortunately, we (you and I born too early in this world) didn’t have the same opportunity as our kids to learn robotics in our school. I would have probably been a NASA scientist today if I did that. (OK. That might be an overstretch but you understand what I mean – it would have surely motivated me to be much more ambitious in technology!) Our founders still went to IITs but I am sure they went because of peer pressure and not because of motivation. (I hope they won't read this :D)

What really excites me about my job is that I can now give this opportunity we missed to the kids of today. With a little bit of support and push from us, the kids of today can do wonders. And at Skyfi Labs, we are all super excited that we got the opportunity to do this.

While it is obvious that building Robots helps kids in developing creativity, curiosity, and logical thinking, you should be very careful while selecting the right kind of robotics project for them. Most important - The robotics project that your kids build should have enough complexity to provide a good learning experience as well as easy enough to build so that they don’t lose their confidence.

Also the kids should feel like “they” designed and built the robots themselves. So spending a lot of money on imported kits that are like plug & play will only serve to be a costly toy and not a learning device.

So, here are some do’s and dont’s while selecting the robotics project for your kid:

Do’s:

  1. Always buy robotics projects that come with a course or a training material, which your kid can use to learn and build the project.
  2. Video based learning should be preferred over ordinary pdf manuals. Remember, your child may lose interest immediately once they feel it is hard and no coming back from there.
  3. Try to look for some robotics projects which use simple programming methodologies like drag-and-drop programming which makes it easy for kids to get started
  4. Whenever possible, prefer certified robotics projects for your kids so that they get the reward at the end of their hard work. And this will motivate them to do more.
  5. Try finding robotics projects which you and your kid can build together at your own time. This will not only help your kid feel comfortable but also gives you a fun time learning together.
  6. Always prefer to do at home at your convenience. Work with the kids yourself as much as possible and motivate them. Teachers will help them once they enter higher education. At the school level, parents are the best motivators.

Dont’s:

  1. Never buy robotics projects without doing any research about the organisation. Since it is a trending subject, a lot of small companies enter the market to make easy money. Always read customer reviews on Google/Facebook before making your decision.
  2. Don’t send to summer/ winter camps which are done by unqualified trainers. Ensure you do proper research about the trainer and organization before sending it. Although everything is a robot, a trainer makes a lot of difference in creating an impact on your kid. The result of the program should not just be a robot. The result should be the impact on your kid!. if you want to enroll your child in such camp, you can checkout playto labs robotics summer camp for kids.
  3. Don’t buy robotics projects which your kid has to do entirely on their own. Prefer robotics projects which come with proper technical support as well to help your kids.
  4. Don’t buy Robotics projects on Amazon etc. Buy from education companies whose objective is to teach. What you buy is an educational experience. Not a product to play with!

Here are some of the robotics projects which you build along with your kids:

1. Line Follower Robot:

This is one of the simple robotics projects which your kid can build and get started within robotics. The robot that your kid build can detect the black line and follow it without deviating with the help of digital IR sensors. Your kid will program the Arduino with simple drag & drop scratch based programming and make the robot work. And your kid can also modify the program later to carryout various robotic operations.

3. Gesture Controlled Robot:

With this robotics project-based course, your kid will learn to build his/her very own robot that can be controlled using hand gestures. It follows the same principle as the video game that your kid plays on your mobile phone. The robot uses an accelerometer sensor to communicate with the robot and actuate the robot accordingly. Your kid will program the Robot with simple drag & drop scratch programming and make the robot work.

5. Fire Fighting Robot:

With this robotics project-based course, your kid will learn to build his/her very own robot that can detect the fire from a remote location and move in that direction to blow it off. The robot uses digital IR sensors to detect the fire, move in that direction with the help of DC motors, and use a miniature DC fan to blow it off. Your kid will program the robot with simple drag & drop scratch programming and make the robot work.
