Certified PLC training for engineering students

Have you ever visited a toy store and wondered how they manage to produce so many toys of the same kind? Or have you ever thought of the amount of labor-power required to produce such goods in bulk?

Not all things can be done just by manpower right, the technology has made our life simple by introducing many machines which not only help in manufacturing goods in bulk but also take very little time to do so.

One such technology-driven application in manufacturing is a Programmable logic controller (PLC), which is an industrial digital computer used to control manufacturing processes, assembly lines, robotic devices, etc and a lot more under any environment.

So, as we know that this world is advancing technologically and the production field is something that would always be in demand, it is a golden opportunity for you’ll to learn about this program and get a job elsewhere! To know more about PLC and certified PLC training, just continue reading this article.

Learn more about PLC

What is a PLC?

So, a PLC is a ruggedized computer used for industrial automation. As discussed above, PLCs are developed to control manufacturing processes, assembly lines and robotic devices. Also, it is reliable in terms of control and ease of programming and to process false diagnoses. It is also known for its reliability under harsh environmental conditions.

There are mainly 2 classifications of PLC’s:

  1. Fixed PLC
  2. Modular PLC

PLC’s comprises of 4 major elements:

  1. Input modules
  2. Output modules
  3. CPU
  4. A programmable device

Firstly, the input modules respond to the digital outputs and analog in some cases. CPU’s kind of evaluates the signal being sent to it. Then the input signal is converted into an understandable output and is sent to the output module and therefore these output modules get converted to signals and hence control the output devices.

After seeing all the above things, one might be wondering, what skills do I need to become a PLC technician? How and where do I learn them?

Well, this article has got all such questions covered.

There are certain things which you need to keep in mind as a beginner to start off learning about the PLC, they are:

  • A very strong sense of Problems solving ability
  • Good management, technical, and communication skills: along with strong technical skills, good communication skills are also needed to meet global standards and provide solutions to companies that work across the globe.
  • Good programming knowledge: a PLC technician need to understand advanced program languages along with other programs like MS Office, MS Word, MS Project, VISIO, AUTOCAD, etc.
  • An ability to work under pressure is required for the job as the demand to produce efficient, cost-effective solutions are very much needed in this job.
  • Capacity to work simultaneously on various projects because the work involves system maintenance and various other electrical supports, you need to be able to work simultaneously when problems arise.

As we have discussed that we need to take courses which provide PLC training, it is important to choose a very good source as your choice and make sure that you gain as much knowledge as you can from it as it is very important for beginners to get a good foundation while learning about PLC’s.

So, one such online source which helps you get better in learning more about PLC and sets up your foundation is the Skyfi Labs. This source is an excellent source wherein you will be availing facilities by purchasing an online course which has benefits like

  • Providing a smart certificate
  • 1-1 Expert support
  • Teaches a lot of technical skills
  • Provide you with a kit consisting of all you need for a PLC project
  • Projects PORTFOLIO
  • It provides an online course where you can learn and build a PLC project.

One such exciting project offered by them is the Automation using PLC project, wherein you will learn about PLC’s, SMPS, Relays and motors, and programming using PLC.

Why is a PLC used?

A PLC as discussed is used to control industrial control systems. It is designed to be enormously robust, so that it could withstand extreme weather conditions, electrical noises, vibrations, etc. They are used to control and monitor sensors and actuators.

They are also used in civil applications like controlling traffic signals, elevators, washing machines, etc. also for monitoring production processes and building systems.

Which software is used in a PLC?

Software is used in a PLC to create user projects and programs which allow the PLC to operate.

So, what software do you have to learn? And where can you learn it?

Before going to the software part, firmware and software are the 2 terms which you need to know about in case of a PLC.

While the software is usually reserved for computer applications that allow logical creation, monitoring, and troubleshooting of a PLC program, Firmware, on the other hand, is used as the operating system used to execute logical instructions.

RS LOGIX is an example of a PLC software, developed by Allen-Bradley.

Other software includes:

  • Siemens AG: they provide PLC’s to petrochemical, chemical, offshore, BMS, FPSO, etc.
  • Moore process automation is another software company that provides PLC’s to offshore industries, chemical, and FPSO.

Good PLC projects

Some of the good PLC projects useful to gain experience are:

  • Water Filling system based on PLC: In this, you will need to learn a software named DELTA. And in this project, you will have to detect the presence of an object on the belt using PLC.
  • Automatic door implementation using PLC: For this project, you will firstly need an IR sensor, PLC, limit switch, servo motor. You will need to work on an automatic door system.
  • Motor speed control by the interfacing of a proximity sensor: In this PLC project you control the speed of DC motor by giving the necessary amount of voltage with the help of PLC. You will need to learn LOGO software for this project.

Refer to this link for more PLC based projects.

The best way to learn PLC is by attending a PLC training program from experts. We at Skyfi Labs have come up with an innovative idea where you can learn and train on PLC right from your home itself. While the kit required will be delivered to your doorstep. Also, our projects are developed by industry experts and if you are stuck while building your project, you can approach us where your doubts are cleared by our expert engineers.
