Sign Language Translator

Sign languages are languages which are used to convey messages using manual communication like simultaneous hand gestures, movement, and orientation of fingers, arm or body movements, and facial expressions. These languages are mainly used by deaf and dumb community. There are many types of sign languages, but the universal sign language is used all over the world.

These sign language cannot be understood by everyone, this is the reason why this project is developed. By this project you can translate the sign language into text and then to speech. In this project you can use the flex sensors to detect the sign language.

The sign language is detected using the flex sensors and this sensor input should be given to a controller and for this you can use Arduino Uno for processing the language and converting it. If you are using five flex sensor, one for each finger in a hand you can get twenty five different combination of sign. Using this you can program your raspberry pi such that for every input combination you can give your own translation of the sign language.

Project Description:

  1. Arduino Uno: Arduino Uno is a microcontroller which can take both analog and digital inputs and you can use this to acquire the data from all the sensors. There are six analog I/O pins and fourteen digital I/O pins which you can use to interface your sensors.
  2. Flex sensors: Flex are basically variable resistors which have a resistance of 30K Ohm when they are straight and the resistance when they are bent for 90 degree is around 70K Ohm.
  3. LCD Display: LCD display display can be used to display the language text translated from the sign language.
  4. Glove: The glove is for fixing the Flex sensor on every finger of the glove.

Project Implementation:

  1. Fix the flex sensors on the glove, one flex sensor to each of the finger.
  2. Program the Arduino such that for every combination of the flex sensor there is a different translation.
  3. Give the translation of the sign language as the reference for the program to convert the sign to text.

Project Brief: Once you setup your project, the motion, gas, and vibration of the machine in the industry can be monitored, and for the contrtolling part you can take picture of the intruder, you can turn on the exhaust, and you can turn off or turn on the machines. Although the controlling is done automatically when the sensors detect the change in the environment, you can also control the project using the android app or through the webaddress. The data is uploaded to the cloud, and this data can be seen from the webaddress or the mobile app you have developed.

Software requirements:

  1. Arduino IDE Version 1.8.5 : You will be needing Arduino IDE software for writing and uploading the program into the Arduino Uno board.

Programming language:

  1. Arduino programming (C++)
