Home automation using DTMF Decoder

In this era of technological advancement, we use automation for everything. There are many techniques to control devices automatically using Arduino, raspberry pi, which requires internet and some more modules to make it work.

It also requires a lot of programming to be done to make it work. Besides, this technique is costlier as we are using sensor and many more things, to control the respective appliances.

In this project, we will be using DTMF decoder to decode the DTMF sounds produced by the normal dial pad in the mobiles or landlines, etc… we are going to automate the home system using the telephone lines. It is cheaper when compared to the other systems. In this project, we use two subsystems one is a remote control system, which uses the tones that are generated from phone or landline. The other system is a phone monitoring system by which we can monitor the status of appliances.

This project is also secure as we are using a secure pin system for authorization. This avoids the non-authorized usage of the appliances. This does not require any Wi-Fi or such components as only DTMF decoder and relays are used.

Requirements:

DTMF decoder.

Two-Channel relay.

PIC16F877 processor.

Knowledge of electrical connections.

Project Implementation:

  1. We need to know the block diagram of Home automation system so that we can make the required connections.
  2. Once connections are made, we need to program and set up the DTMF decoder with any of the landline or mobile phone.
  3. Once setup is done, we need to call the number and enter the PIN for the authorization into the home automation.
  4. After successful authentication, the phone waits for the number to be entered and from the user.
  5. According to the entered number, the decoder converts it into the signal and transmits it to the PIC controller.
  6. This PIC controller will control the devices with the predefined program and relays. It switches on and switches off the relays as per the predefined program.

Advantages:

  • It is easy to work through the phone rather Wi-fi.
  • It is secure as the person with a pin can only authorize and control the appliances.
  • It can also work in absence of Wi-fi and in places where the only landline or GSM signals are available.

Conclusion:

In this project, we can access the home remotely while blocking others. We can control devices like lamps, water heater, oven, television, AC while sitting at some remote place.
